We can often need to type a non English character with an accent. But how do you achieve it when it's not listed on the Mac or iPhone keyboard. Follow along to find out the solution whether you are on MacOS, iPadOS or iOS.
Typing Accents in MacOS, iPadOS and iOS
There are many methods for getting the accent you require built right into the OS, you just need to access them. The procedure is a little different for both MacOS and iPadOS/iOS. Check out our video below to find out more.

On MacOS you can also hover over the accented character that you would like to select in the popover and click it, but it's quicker to keep your hands on the keyboard with the other method.
The steps: MacOS
- Locate the base character for the accent you would like to use.
- Press and hold the key for this base character until the accent popover is revealed.
- From the popover locate the accent you wish to use and reference the greyed out numeral underneath.
- Press the corresponding number on the keyboard to insert the correct accented character.
The steps: iPadOS/iOS
- Locate the base character for the accent you would like to use.
- Press and hold the key for this base character until the accent popover is revealed.
- Slide your finger up and over to the accent you require.
- Let go and the accented character will be inserted.
